Jane Garrett is keen to use her public policy experience to make sure Yarra Council provides programs and facilities that “create strong and caring communities”.
The 36-year-old was elected to Council as a representative of Nicholls Ward – which takes in North Carlton, North Fitzroy, Princes Hill, and parts of Fitzroy and Clifton Hill – in November 2008.
Inspired by the Yarra community’s strong history of social justice and activism, Cr Garrett wants to do her bit to build community well-being.
“I will advocate for programs and facilities that generate community connectedness and help people realise their full potential, whatever their individual circumstances,” Cr Garrett said.
A mother of two girls, she believes Council needs to step up its support for local working parents.
“I want to ensure that Yarra residents are able to access quality child care across the municipality,” she said.
Her other priorities include improving Council’s delivery of basic services (such as clean, well-lit streets), and expanding programs that help residents make their lifestyles and homes (owned or rented) more sustainable.
The Manager of Government Relations at plaintiff law firm Slater and Gordon, Cr Garrett previously worked as a Senior Legal and Policy Advisor to the former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks.
She is a member of the Australian Labor Party, and has a Bachelor of Laws (Honors) and a Bachelor of Arts.
Cr Garrett represents Yarra Council on the Municipal Association of Victoria, the Merri Creek Management Committee, and Mayors for Peace.
She sits on the following Council Committees: Planning, Infrastructure and Environment Committee, Aboriginal Advisory Committee, Early Years (Childhood) Reference Group and Asset Management Steering Committee.
Cr Garrett can be contacted on 9205 5055 or 0428 374 682 or at Jane.Garrett@yarracity.vic.gov.au
