Having stood for election to Yarra Council in 2004, Geoff Barbour got the call up more than three years later.
He was declared elected in February 2008 after the resignation of Cr Annabel Barbara resulted in a count-back of votes cast in the 2004 election, with Cr Barbour declared the winner.
At the November 2008 general Council elections, he was re-elected as a representative of Langridge ward (which takes in Clifton Hill, Fairfield, Alphington, Fitzroy, Collingwood and Abbotsford).
He was galvanised into standing for Council when, as President of the Fitzroy Residents’ Association, he helped residents raise concerns about planning, parking and late trading pubs and clubs.
A Yarra resident for more than 30 years, Cr Barbour seeks to reconcile Yarra's vibrant arts scene with the needs of residents.
“One of the reasons that Yarra is such a great place to live is because we have so many thriving entertainment venues at our doorstop,” Cr Barbour said.
“However, Council – through its planning decisions and local laws enforcement – plays an important role in ensuring venues don’t negatively impact on their residential neighbourhoods, whether that be through excessive noise, litter or other means.”
Cr Barbour also wants to see Council invest in its assets so they meet community needs – whether that be upgrading the Collingwood Leisure Centre, turning the vacant Lourdes Building (near Abbotsford Convent) into a childcare facility or providing more wireless internet hot spots in local parks and community hubs.
A member of the Australian Labor Party, Cr Barbour lives in Fitzroy with his partner and their two children.
He works in finance for an industry superannuation fund, and serves on the North Yarra Community Health Board, which oversees the Collingwood, Fitzroy and Carlton Community Health Centres.
He chairs Council’s Planning, Infrastructure and Environment Committee, sits on Council’s Municipal Health Plan advisory committee, and is a Council delegate to the Victorian Local Governance Association.
