At its meeting on 20 October 2009, Council resolved to introduce Local Law No.14
– Anti Slavery and Sexual Servitude Local Law.
This law requires proprietors of brothels in Yarra to display prominent signage in brothel reception areas and in every room where an act of prostitution takes place.
The signage will include information about sex slavery, ensuring that sex workers know that help is available if they need it and are aware of who to contact.
The signage - the form and content of which will be specified by Council - must be clearly visible and appear in English, Mandarin, Korean, Russian and Thai.
Brothel owners who fail to comply with the law can be issued a fine of $500 , with those who fail to comply with a Notice to Comply with the law liable for a $1000 fine.
The local law will come into effect in early November 2009.
