Applying through Yarra – Fees, forms and checklists
Yarra Council has it’s own building surveyors who can assist you in obtaining a building permit and will undertake relevant inspections of building works. When you lodge your building permit application with us you will get the benefit of local knowledge and a full permit and inspection service.
Building Permits are generally required for:
- External work to your house including extensions, verandas, garages and second storeys
- Internal work to your house that requires windows or walls to be moved or altered
- Any new building
- Demolition of an old building
- Change of use of a building eg: from warehouse to dwelling
- A fence
- Construction of a swimming pool or spa
- Minor structures eg. carports, roller doors etc
When you have submitted your application, please allow 10 working days for your documentation to be assessed. When all requirements are met, a permit will be issued by mail.
The building permit fee will be based on the cost of the project. In addition, a lodgement fee is payable for building work with a cost of $5000 or more and a State Government Building Permit Levy is payable for building work with a cost greater than $10,000.
