Council is responsible for the naming of public assets within the city.
While Yarra is known for its century-old thoroughfares and heritage architecture, the city continues to evolve each year. One element of this evolution is to better identify community assets, such as roads and parks. Council is responsible for naming these assets.
The naming process allows Council to recognise the history and cultural significance of an area or to honour the contributions of a person or group.
Naming of Roads, Features and Localities Policy (under which Council gives priority to Woiwurrung names) Council will consult the Wurundjeri community, local historical societies and the wider Yarra community.
Council then considers this feedback before making a decision in accordance with the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and the Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010 Version 2.
This page provides an up-to-date listing of naming projects that Council is seeking community feedback on. Each entry represents an opportunity to have your say!
