Cr Misha Coleman
Cr Misha Coleman was first elected to Council as a representative of Melba Ward - which takes in Richmond, Burnley and Cremorne - during the Victorian Local Government Elections on 27 October 2012.
Cr Coleman joined Yarra Council following a career in international community development, which included three years at the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and most recently, as CEO of Anglican Overseas Aid.
Cr Coleman was awarded the Australian Service Medal for peacekeeping efforts in Papua New Guinea and in 2005, was awarded medals for her work in the agricultural and fishery sectors in Vietnam.
Cr Coleman said that having lived in Yarra for the past six years and with her two children going to school in Yarra, she has really now turned her focus back towards local community development issues and wants to work on matters that are affecting families and businesses.
“Researching the need for more secondary school options for boys in Richmond and advocating for more late night public transport will be the main priorities during my first term at Council,” Cr Coleman said.
“I’m also very keen to support households and business to become carbon neutral and to preserve the iconic trees in Melba Ward. Wherever possible, I hope that future tree planting can comprise of indigenous species.” she said.
Cr Coleman is an elected member to a number of board and executive committees in the international community development sector and is employed by the National Council of Churches to establish their first Taskforce on Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
Cr Coleman is a member of Council's Australia Day Awards Committee, Audit Committee, Business Advisory Group, Performance Review Sub Committee and the Yarra Committee for Women.
She represents Council on the Metropolitan (Local Government) Waste Management Forum.
She has a Masters Degree in Environmental Law and post-graduate qualifications in international development, monitoring and evaluation. She was formerly a practicing midwife and worked as a community health nurse in many remote indigenous communities in Australia.
Cr Coleman is a member of the Greens Party.
