Councillor Allowances
At its meeting on 18 December, Council formally set allowances for its recently elected Mayor and Councillors.
Council set the Mayor’s allowance at $75,564.25 per annum (including 9% equivalent to the superannuation guarantee levy) and the allowance for all other Councillors’ at $24,421.45 per annum (including 9% equivalent to the superannuation guarantee levy).
The allowances apply for the four-year term of the Council and will be adjusted annually by order of the Minister for Local Government, in line with a cost of living indexation.
In accordance with section 74 of the Local Government Act, Council sought community feedback about the proposed new allowances in November 2012. No submissions were received.
As part of its review of the allowances, Council took in to account the Local Government (Councillor Remuneration Review) Panel Report into the roles and responsibilities of Councillors. That report reflects the extent of responsibility of Councillors and seeks to ensure there is no financial barrier to candidates nominating for Council election.
