Aboriginal Advisory Group

Aboriginal flagThis Advisory Group provides for on-going consultation between the Indigenous community and Council.

The Group’s membership includes Aboriginal Elders, community members, and representatives of Aboriginal organisations in Yarra including: Melbourne Aboriginal Youth, Sport and Recreation (MAYSAR), Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd (VACSAL) and representatives of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and the Federal Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Wurundjeri Elder Annette Xiberras co-chairs the committee, and Yarra Councillors Amanda Stone and Mayor Phillip Vlahogiannis are also members of the committee.

The Group meets monthly to actively work on a broad range of issues such as health, housing, legal matters, sport and recreation, culture, heritage, environment, employment, and training.  

It also

  • provides Council with strategic advice regarding issues pertinent to the Wurundjeri people and issues pertaining to social justice for Indigenous Australians
  • assists Council in its on-going role in regards to issues affecting local Indigenous Australians
  • oversees the development and implementation of Council’s Aboriginal Partnerships Plan
