Victoria Street gateway funding

05 August 2010

Victoria Street is set to be given a grand new entrance designed to celebrate its unique cultural contribution to Melbourne.

Yarra City Council has welcomed today’s announcement by the Federal Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese to invest $500,000 into the Victoria Street gateway project.

The funding will be spent on transforming the streetscape between Hoddle and Church streets.

Mayor Jane Garrett said Federal Labor’s commitment to the Victoria Street project was a fantastic boost for the popular precinct.

“With its tourist-friendly restaurant and shopping options and its strong cultural identity, Victoria Street typifies everything there is to love about our city,” Cr Garrett said.

“It is vital that we create a gateway that not only gives prominence to Victoria Street as an important and vibrant shopping strip but also reflects the Asian community’s strong ties to the precinct.

“The Victoria Street community have been wanting this to happen for some time now so it’s great to know that together we can start progressing this initiative.”

The gateway project has been a longstanding vision of Council and local businesses and was included in the draft Victoria Street Structure Plan adopted by Council in April this year.

In recent months Council has met with stakeholders to hear their views on how the entrance should look.

Council invested $50,000 on concept designs and has welcomed the enthusiastic input from all involved, including the Richmond Asian Business Association.

A further $200,000 has been allocated in Council’s recent budget to help fund the work.
