Swim Squads

Squad participant swimming lapsThe Yarra Leisure Squad program offers swimmers the opportunity to train all year round with our team of committed, experienced coaches and staff. The multilevel squad program caters for swimmers of all ages who wish to increase fitness, endurance and improve technique.

Our squad program provides a comprehensive pathway for all swimmers, by developing efficient techniques and a high level of skill in all strokes. Sessions are held in our two 50 metre and one 25 metre pools, and dry land resistance training is built into the program.

Our programs provide the following:

  • Industry Qualified Coaches
  • Multiple weekly squad sessions
  • Convenient training times
  • Multi-level program
  • Year round training programs with scheduled breaks 
  • Dry land & resistance training
  • Unlimited use of all Yarra Leisure pools outside of session times

District Squad

The District Squad training program is designed for swimmers with an interest in club level swimming and improving their level of skills and fitness in the water.

District swimmers are encouraged to attend 2 sessions per week.

Pre-State Squad

The Pre-State Squad training program is designed for swimmers with an interest in developing the strokes and techniques used in competition level swimming. Participation at various competitions is encouraged, with a strong focus on improving personal best times and working towards State Qualifying Times.

Pre-State swimmers are encouraged to attend 3-4 sessions per week.

State Squad

The State Squad training program is designed for swimmers looking to advance their stroke skills and techniques to an elite level. Participation at State level competitions is encouraged with an aim to achieve National Qualifying Times.

State swimmers are expected to attend 4-6 sessions per week.

National Squad

The National Level squad is designed to cater for those training to achieve National Championship qualifying times. A gym membership is included at this level and specific dry-land sessions are encouraged for swimmers to attend, to compliment their squad training.

National swimmers are expected to attend 7+ sessions per week.

Justin Griggs is the Squad Coach of the Collingwood Squad Program.

Justin is a Green Licence Coach with over 5 years coaching experience. Justin holds a degree in Exercise Science and is a qualified Secondary School teacher. With a long- standing international swimming career himself, Justin has represented Australia at two World Cup meets and has recently completed a two year scholarship, training with a US College Team.

With an obvious passion for swimming, Justin is committed to providing a challenging, stimulating and fun environment for all swimmers to enjoy. Justin is based at the Collingwood Leisure Centre and also coaches long-course sessions at the Fitzroy Swimming Pool.

Danny Gaffy is the Head Coach of the Richmond Squad Program.

Danny is a Bronze Licence coach with over 18 years coaching experience. Danny has coached swimmers to the Australian Age National Championships, Australian Open Water National Championships and Victoria State Championships – with swimmers finishing in podium places!

In 2009, Danny was awarded the coveted Junior Excellence Achievement Award from Swimming Australia for his achievements in this area.

Danny is based out of the Richmond Recreation Centre Squad program and is aided by assistant coaches. 

Club details

The City of Yarra is home to two of the oldest swimming clubs in Victoria.

The clubs provide a supportive community for swimmers of all abilities seeking to improve fitness, skills and/or competitive performance.

All Swimmers are invited to join;

Club membership is ideal for those who enjoy swimming and are interested in the social aspects of a club. Swimmers will be encouraged to work towards competitive swimming with clubs providing full support and access to all levels of competitive swimming.

Club membership is suitable for swimmers from about 8 years of age who have achieved a minimum level 4 ability at Yarra Leisure.

Yarra Roughies Masters Swimming Club

The Yarra Roughies Masters Swimming Club is based at Fitzroy Swimming Pool. The club is for adults swimmers of all ages and abilities.  The club enjoys training, competing and attending a variety of social activities throughout the year.

If you like the idea of fitness or competitive swimming, then Masters swimming may be for you. The Roughies train as part of the swim squad program provided by Yarra Triathlon as they are the affiliated masters swimming club.
