From 1 July Yarra’s green waste service will be replaced by the introduction of Council’s food and garden organics (FOGO) collection service. From 1 July all materials for collection must fit inside your FOGO bin with the lid closed. The City of Yarra offers a free garden waste service to all residents for the collection of branches, prunings and grass clippings.
Record rainfall across Victoria has led to rapid vegetation growth and we currently have a higher than usual demand for our green waste collection services.
You can request multiple green waste pickups throughout the year, however there is a limit of one collection per fortnight with a maximum of one cubic metre per collection.
Green waste collections are only available to residential properties in Yarra.
How to book a green waste collection

You’ll receive confirmation with the scheduled date for your collection.
We aim to collect your green waste within approximately 10 days of you sending through a request. Please note delays may occur in times of high demand.
What green waste can be collected?
Each green waste collection can be up to one cubic metre. It can include branches, lawn clippings and small prunings.
- All branches must be tied together with string or twine only, in bundles no longer than 1.8m in length and 30cm in diameter. Do not tie branches with plastic or wire.
- Lawn clippings or small prunings must be placed in a rigid container (a plastic crate or cardboard box), which can be lifted easily by one person. The container will be left behind after collection.
Bags of any kind are not permitted. Even if bags are advertised as heavy duty for garden waste, they will not be accepted.
What will not be collected?
Not all green waste items can be collected. This includes:

Place your green waste out the night before your scheduled pickup. It's illegal to place items out more than 24 hours before pickup.
All green waste must be placed for collection on the kerb at the front of your property.
Green waste will only be collected from a laneway behind your property if weekly rubbish and recycling bins are also collected from that laneway.

Option to use a green waste bin you've purchased elsewhere

Please note that due to potential contamination issues, we cannot accept green waste in City of Yarra rubbish, recycling or glass bins.

If you have previously purchased a large lime green-lidded bin for your green waste collections from Council, this will automatically become your FOGO bin from 1 July.
If you have been using alternative containers/boxes or bins purchased from elsewhere for your green waste collections, you will receive a new FOGO bin delivered to your home between 1 April and 30 June for FOGO collections starting 1 July.
