Waste Services
Council provides a weekly recycling and waste collection service for local residents and businesses.
Council's waste service also maintains more than 600 street and park bins across the City, and routinely cleans all local streets and major shopping strips.
People are encouraged to think sustainably and recycle as much as they can, to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Christmas tree collection service
Council provides a free Christmas tree collection service in January. Collected trees will be mulched and composted.
Trees will be picked up from within property lines from Wednesday 4 January until the end of January. To register for a collection, call Council on 9205 5190.

Waste Management Plan
In December 2009, Council adopted a five-year
Waste Management Plan (1.37MB) which sets out the actions Council will take to increase the amount of materials being recycled, to expand local composting programs and to increase community awareness about waste diversion options.
Council estimates the plan could reduce the amount of materials sent to landfill annually by 26 kilograms per Yarra resident, and lift the city’s diversion rate to 57%.
Council has a Customer Service Guarantee which includes 64 targets that specify the level of service you should expect from Council. Read more about our commitments for Waste Services in the Customer Service Guarantee.
