Waste Minimisation - Household tips
Everyone can take steps to minimise their household waste. Minimising waste helps conserve precious natural resources like minerals and forests; it reduces the amount of energy used in mining and production; and extends the life of existing landfill sites.
Some innovative ways to reduce household waste include:
- Buy in bulk to eliminate packaging
- Use a compost or worm farm for food scraps
- Take a back-pack, trolley, or green bags whenever you go shopping
- Use your own travel-mug for take away coffee
- Give ice cream containers and egg cartons to kindergartens and schools for craft activities
- Only buy what you need
- Buy products that use recycled materials
- Give unwanted items to charity
- Reuse jars and containers to store household items
- Buy second-hand items or get equipment repaired instead of throwing it out
