Household Chemicals - Disposal

Some materials are not suitable for your garbage or recycling bins because they contain contaminants and may cause injury to the collection or processing teams.

These materials may include:

• Paint, paint strippers, thinner and turps
• Glues – water based and solvents
• Garden chemicals
• Kitchen and oven cleaners
• Toilet and drain cleaners
• Pool cleaners
• Batteries
• Medicines
• Engine Oil

Sustainability Victoria, in conjunction with local councils, offers a collection service for chemicals.

The ResourceSmart website features a list of permanent “Detox Your Home” disposal facilities and what they accept.

There is also a free mobile collection service which visits selected sites around Victoria.
