In 2006-07 Council spent over $125,000 implementing graffiti removal programs. During this 12 month period Council removed 5,700m2 of illegal graffiti.
Council has also developed a program with the Department of Justice that involves getting individuals serving community based orders to remove graffiti in the local area. Some of these individuals are serving community based orders because they were caught graffiting.
Council, through its Graffiti Management Policy, supports legal forms of public art and related programs, such as the Napier Studios partnership project with CityLink. Council also recognises and appreciates the many significant street art works throughout Yarra.
Council’s focus is on removing and preventing illegal tagging and other kinds of unsightly defacement.
