Commercial Waste

The wide range of commercial businesses in Yarra produce extremely varied types of waste and have varying waste collection needs - making it too difficult for Council to manage a commercial waste collection service efficiently and economically. Commercial businesses are required to contract individual waste contractors to collect and dispose of their waste.

Commercial Waste Education

The City of Yarra is committed to working with commercial businesses to educate owners and staff on correct waste management practices, particularly to reduce waste reaching the Yarra River via stormwater drains.
If businesses do not manage their waste correctly, it can cause a range of problems, including attraction of flies/pests, generation of odour, and obstruction of laneways. These problems can often be simply solved by better management practices, and Council is happy to advise businesses on ways to develop better waste practices.

Commercial Waste and the Law

Commercial businesses need to comply with a number of laws that relate to waste management. There are laws in place that state:

• Commercial waste is not allowed to cause a nuisance from offensive odours or attraction of pests. Health Act 1958
• Commercial waste is not allowed to contaminate our stormwater system, which includes all drains that discharge to the Merri Creek and Yarra River. Environment Protection Act 1970
• Commercial waste receptacles (bins, hoppers, etc) are not allowed to obstruct roadways. Local Law

If you are concerned about the waste practices of a particular business, you can register your concerns by submitting a Comercial Waste Complaint Form.
