Waste Collection

Council manages the collection of waste and recyclables for residential properties within the City of Yarra. Residents are encouraged to think sustainably and recycle as much as they can, to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Our waste service also maintains more than 600 street and park bins across the City, and routinely cleans all local streets and major shopping strips.

Council estimates that about 45% of the waste generated in Yarra is currently being diverted from landfill, either through recycling or other means.

In analysing the content of garbage bins, food waste accounts for 38%, potential recyclables for 26% and green waste for 2%.

In December 2009, Council adopted a five-year Waste Management Plan pdfwhich sets out the actions Council will take to increase the amount of materials being recycled, to expand local composting programs and to increase community awareness about waste diversion options.

Council estimates the plan could reduce the amount of materials sent to landfill annually by 26 kilograms per Yarra resident, and lift the city’s diversion rate to 57%.

Customer Service Guarantee Council has introduced a Customer Service Guarantee, with 60 specific commitments, to improve customer service for the Yarra community. Read more about our commitments for Waste Collection.
