Car sharing

Car sharing is a new concept in personal transport. It involves members of car sharing organisations having access to a fleet of shared cars as an alternative to owning their own car. Members pay each time they use a shared car. Cars can be booked for trips as short as one hour. The cars are parked at various locations around the community close to where members live or work.

Two car sharing organisations, GoGet and Flexicar are now helping turn Yarra Council's vision into a reality.

Flexicar cars are located in:

• Abbotsford
  Stanton Street – Outside the Collingwood Station, opposite the Town Hall.
  Albert Street – On the east side of the street, near the corner of Victoria Street.
• Carlton North
  Rathdowne Street - Rathdowne Street, near the corner with Curtain Street, directly in front of the park in Rathdowne Village.
  Pigdon Street - Pigdon Street, near the corner with Lygon Street. Across Lygon Street from the flower shops on the Princes Hill side.
• Clifton Hill
  Queens Parade – On the east side, in the service lane, outside the Bendigo Bank.
  North Terrace – On the south side, first bay closest to Hoddle St, after the bus stop.
• Collingwood
  Hotham Street -Near the intersection with Smith Street. The first park on the north side of the street.
  Langridge Street – Near the corner of Oxford Street.
  Wellington Street – East side, first bay closest to Alexandra Parade.
• Fitzroy
  Kerr Street - Corner of Kerr & Smith Streets on the south side of Kerr, alongside the Sportpower store.
  Victoria Street - On the corner of Victoria Street and Brunswick Street. Opposite the vibrant Red Tongue Cafe.
  Napier Street - Outside Fitzroy Town Hall.
• Fitzroy North
  Piedemontes Carpark - First park on Best Street, adjacent to the Piedimontes car park.
  Newry Street - Newry Street, near the corner with Brunswick Street. North side of Newry Street, after the loading zone, near the Sandwich Bar. Across the road from the Lord Newry Hotel.
  Park Street - Park Street, near the corner of Nicholson Street. The park is in on the north side of Park Street, west of Nicholson Street, right next to the bike trail.
• Richmond
  Lyndhurst Street - On the Eastern side of Lyndhurst Street to the South of Bridge Road across from the Richmond Town Hall.
  Lennox Street - On the Eastern side of Lennox Street to the North of Richmond Terrace.
  Muir Street - Eastern side of Muir Street to the North of Freeman Street

Go-Get cars are at:

• Bell Street Fitzroy adjacent to Brunswick Street (Melway 2C A8)
• Stanton Street Abbotsford adjacent to Collingwood Railway Station (Melway 2C J10)
• Scotchmer Street North Fitzroy near St Georges Road (Melway 30 B11)

The City of Yarra supports car sharing because it offers the potential to reduce parking demand on Council streets. One car-sharing car can replace many privately-owned vehicles. Some Yarra residents only own cars for occasional or weekend use. These cars often sit idle much of the week taking up precious, on-street car spaces that neighbours or visitors might otherwise use.

Other reasons Council supports car sharing are to reduce driving and car dependence, to promote the sharing of scarce resources and to make non car-owning lifestyles more viable in Yarra by reducing the cost of access to cars for those who only need to use one infrequently. Council is supporting car sharing by making permanent, on-street car parking spaces available to car sharing organisations.

Council is also promoting car sharing by assisting its own officers to use car sharing cars for work travel. It is hoped that this will help council reduce Council's car fleet and costs as well as helping to make car sharing more viable and available to more people in the Yarra community.
