Parking Permits

Council offers five different parking permits – residential, business, disabled, visitor and, temporary. These permits enable people to park legally in designated areas in Yarra for an annual fee, or for free if you are applying for a disabled permit.

The pricing structure of parking permits has been designed to encourage people to reduce their reliance on having more than one vehicle, while living in an inner city area that is well serviced by public transport.

In 2004 Council introduced a policy to ease pressure on street parking. New developments that increase density (like dual occupancies) are not eligible for residential parking permits. Developers either have to provide off-street parking or the property is sold without the provision of street parking.

Residential/ Visitor Parking Permit

Most Yarra properties are entitled to up to three on-street car parking permits in total, which can include one Visitor Parking Permit.

Properties not eligible for these permits (including a visitors parking permit) are any residential, mixed use, commercial or industrial development where the:

Council introduced these restrictions to encourage all new developments in Yarra to provide their own off-street parking in an effort to take some of the pressure off this limited resource. There are some exemptions to these restrictions. For more information on this please call 9205 5255.

When you first move to the area you can obtain a free transitional permit for two weeks until you have proof of residency and then you can apply for a residential parking permit.

Visitor Permits are issued to residents only – one per household. They are for short-stay visitors. A visitor permit is only valid for use in the street specified on the permit and within two surrounding streets.

Cost
First Permit - $27
Second Permit - $59
Third Permit - $90
Health care cardholder's are exempt from the $27 first permit fee (per property).

 Business Parking Permit
Business permits are only issued to properties with no off-street parking. The number of permits issued to a business is determined by the length of their street frontage. When applying for this permit you will need to present or provide copies of your business registration details. Businesses are not eligible for visitor permits and permits are not available for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes is gross weight or vehicles 7.5 metres or more in length.

In many cases Council Officers will have already assessed whether or not your property is eligible for a business parking permit. Before filling in an application form contact Council’s Parking Services on 9205 5255 to see if you are eligible.

Business parking permits are subject to approval, therefore your permit is not valid until your sticker has been issued.

First permit in Retail Zone for the first 5 metres of street frontage - $95
Second permit and subsequent permits (based on additional 10 metre increments of street frontage - $142

Your medical practitioner then needs to send the completed application form to Council. If approved, Council will send the permit to you in the mail.

There are two categories of disabled parking permits:

This permit is valid anywhere in Australia. A driver using the permit must either be the permit holder or someone parking the vehicle for the permit holder in order for them to be dropped off or picked up.
