Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy The River of Life, was developed to support a healthy, positive and independent ageing experience for older people in the City of Yarra.

The strategy assists Council in planning the resourcing of social and physical infrastructure to effectively manage the need for affordable housing, health and community services, transport, lifelong learning, physical activity and cultural and community participation and engagement.
Six key objectives are outlined in the strategy:
Objective One: Social connections
Fostering community participation and developing a strong sense of belonging for older people
Objective Two: Active, healthy living
Ensuring older people have access to opportunities for all aspects of healthy living including physical, mental and emotional health and social support
Objective Three: Supportive environments
Ensuring accessibility and mobility throughout the municipality
Objective Four: Ageing in Place
Supporting residents to live well and age successfully within their local community
Objective Five: Lifelong Learning
Supporting and creating employment, retirement and lifelong learning opportunities
Objective Six: Community Planning and Partnerships
Encouraging and establishing opportunities for older people and organisations to work together and participate in community planning and decision making.
