Aboriginal Yarra

The Wurundjeri people were the first owners of this part of the country and Council recognises them as the custodians of the cultural heritage of this land.

The City of Yarra, especially the suburbs of Fitzroy and Collingwood, hold special historical significance for the Aboriginal community. These areas were a major hub of social and political activity for the Aboriginal community, and today remain a critical centre for Aboriginal services and organisations.

Yarra Council is committed  to upholding the proud Aboriginal history of Yarra and to supporting the rights of the Aboriginal community. Council is also committed to building strong partnerships with the local Aboriginal community to continue the journey towards reconciliation.
