International Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD), held annually on 8 March, now unites millions of women around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations. Many events are taking place across the globe and at home to celebrate this important date. For more information visit www.internationalwomensday.com/default.asp.

The City of Yarra is proud to support IWD events in the community by providing a listing of activities on this website.

Women Making Waves

A program that provides all women with the opportunity to swim, relax and participate in aqua activities in a male free and culturally sensitive environment. The program is run on Saturday evenings at the Collingwood Leisure Centre between 6.30pm-8.30pm with an aqua class being held at 7pm-8pm.

Prices:
$4.20 for adults
$2.10 for concession
$2.40 for children
Local pensioners FREE

This cost covers the use of pool, spa/sauna and aqua class.

International Women’s Day background information
1909 - First National Women’s Day held in the United States to support working rights, equal pay and better working conditions for women.
1911 - First International Women’s Day held in Germany and various other European cities. More than one million men and women attended rallies demanding the right for women to vote, hold public office, to work, to seek vocational training and to end the discrimination of women on the job.
1913-1914 – On the eve of World War 1 Russian women participated in their first International Women’s Day as part of their movement against the war.
1917 – With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women decided to conduct a series of protests which launched the Russian revolution. Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the vote. This occurred on Sunday 23 February according to the Julian calendar, which translates to the 8 March on the Gregorian calendar.

Australia and New Zealand led the world in affording women political and social rights. June 2002 marked 100 years since Australia granted women the right to vote and stand for parliament in federal elections.
