Summer Litter Blitz Campaign - Stage Two

Yarra City Council is undertaking stage two of the Summer Litter Blitz campaign and is again cracking down on litter in local shopping strips.

Litter has a significant impact on the environment, in particular cigarette butts, which end up in our waterways. Aside from the dreadful pollution this causes, litter harms aquatic and animal life as it is often mistaken for food.

State Two of the Summer Litter Blitz Campaign involves:

• Education – from 3 March to 16 March
• Enforcement – from 17 March to 29 March

Under the Environmental Protection Act people can be fined $110 for small items of litter, $220 for items such as lit cigarette butts and over $4,000 if the matter proceeds to court.
