Galleries

History & diversity

The City of Yarra is known for its diverse artistic and cultural life. It is home to many artists, arts organisations and many leading contemporary galleries.

Yarra Gallery Symbol

Yarra Gallery symbol

The City of Yarra has developed the Yarra Gallery Symbol to make visual arts venues more accessible to both visitors and the local community. Look out for this bold orange street sign which directs you to many of Yarra's contemporary art galleries. To complement the gallery logo street signs, a complete list of City of Yarra’s galleries is available here. The directory has recently been updated - look out for further changes in the future.

History

In the 1960's, as Yarra's manufacturing industries declined, warehouses and factories throughout the City were abandoned. Painters, sculptors and performers began to transform these large disused spaces into studios, galleries and theatres, and a new community grew from the skeleton of the old.

Diversity

Within the multicultural community of Yarra you find leading commercial galleries, contemporary arts spaces, artist run galleries and cafes with regular exhibitions. Each gallery is distinct, each catering for a different audience and clientele.
