Fines for pet owners
Council’s first approach is to help residents be good pet owners by providing information and advice. However, Council does have the authority to issue fines under a local law and State legislation for those pet owners who do not do the right thing. Magistrates Court action is mandatory in some cases for example with dog attacks.
Fines can be issued for the following:
- Cat trespassing onto private property
- Keeping excess animals on your property - $100
- Failure to pick up after your dog - $200
- Failure to carry a litter device - $200
- Dog at large or not securely confined during the day/night - $165 (day) $220 (night)
- Dogs in public places, not complying with Council Order - $110
- Dog creating a nuisance - $56
- Failure to register your pet or provide proof of registration - $220
