Yarra City Council is calling for residents, students and employees to get involved in its new Environment Community Consultative Committee.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said this was the perfect opportunity for members of the community to play a role in shaping the municipality’s future sustainability.
“The consultative committee will provide feedback to Council to help develop us our environmental programs and policy in line with the Yarra Environment Strategy,” Cr Stone said.
“We have big goals – none bigger than Yarra becoming carbon neutral by 2020 – and we’re keen to have a team around us to help drive that change,” she said.
“We want to hear what our committee thinks of our community environmental initiatives, how we deliver our programs and our decision making processes.”
The committee will comprise three Councillors and up to 12 members from the community, including community group representatives and at least one person under the age of 21.
“Yarra’s young people are particularly well-educated about our environment and Council is very keen to get them involved as this will be their future living and working space,” Cr Stone said.
Cr Stone said the committee would meet on a quarterly basis over the next year at the Fitzroy Town Hall.
Residents wanting to be involved in the consultative committee will need to submit a formal application to Silvana Predebon, Coordinator, Environmental Sustainability Unit stating:
Applications close on Friday 18 September, at 5pm. For more information and for the committee’s terms of reference, log on to yarracity.vic.gov.au/Consultation/ or contact Silvana Predebon on 9205 5753.
