Yarra residents are invited to get their hands dirty and help plant more than 4,000 seedlings at Quarries Park, Clifton Hill, on National Tree Day, Sunday 2 August.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said planting would start at 10am and be followed by free activities including a BBQ lunch, face painting, bush babies animal enclosure and more.
“We’ll be planting more than 4,000 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses, which will provide food and habitat for native fauna,” Cr Stone said.
“We’ll create two new indigenous plant areas and extend four existing areas,” she said.
“No tree-planting experience is necessary and we welcome everyone to come to Quarries Park for an enjoyable day that will help the local environment.”
Gloves and digging equipment will be provided to participants at the event, which will conclude with the BBQ at about 12.30pm.
Yarra City Council has been involved in National Tree Day since 2001. Over the past eight years, residents have planted more than 25,000 seedlings in Yarra as part of National Tree Day.
Last year 1.6 million seedlings were planted across Australia on National Tree Day and it’s hoped that number will be surpassed in 2009.
National Tree Day is coordinated by Planet Ark and gives all Australians an opportunity to get involved with their local environment at a community level.
