Yarra Council takes precautions in light of Swine flu

In light of several local children being diagnosed with Swine flu, Yarra City Council has taken the precaution of cancelling group activities for children in its libraries for the next fortnight.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the vast majority of Council’s programs and events were proceeding as usual.

“We want to do whatever we can to limit the spread of Swine flu,” Cr Stone said.

“We have decided to err on the side of caution by cancelling children’s story-time sessions, and other group activities for children in our libraries for the next fortnight,” she said.

“We have made this decision because of the potential for infection when a group of young children are bunched together for some time in a confined space.”

Cr Stone said the Council, which was being updated regularly by State Government health officials, was keeping a watching brief on the situation and would continue to assess regularly whether other changes to its programs and services were warranted.

“Where we assess there might be an elevated risk to members of the community, we will consider adjusting other services and events,” she said.

She said any residents with concerns about Swine Flu should contact the Federal Government’s Swine Influenza Hotline on 180 2007, or Nurse-On-Call on 1300 606 024.
