Yarra’s Solar Powered Kids
Eleven childcare centres in Yarra will be powered by solar electricity before the end of 2009, significantly decreasing their carbon footprint.
Yarra City Council is contributing more than $50,000 to the project and has secured $106,000 Federal Government funding and $55,000 from the State Government’s Victorian Solar in Schools Initiative.
Solar systems will be installed at the following childcare centres:
- Clifton Childcare Co-operative, North Fitzroy
- East West Childcare Association, Fitzroy
- Gold Street Children’s Centre, Collingwood
- John Street Community Early Childhood Cooperative, Fitzroy
- Keele Street Children’s Centre, North Carlton
- North Carlton Preschool, North Carlton
- North Fitzroy Childcare Cooperative, North Fitzroy
- Richmond Multicultural Children’s Centre, Richmond
- Richmond Preschool, Richmond
- Yarraberg Children’s Centre, Richmond
- Yarralea Children’s Centre, Alphington
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the installations would make a significant contribution towards Council’s goal to generate 10% of electricity locally from renewable sources by 2012.
“Across the 11 childcare centres, the new solar power systems will save approximately 26.8 tonnes of CO2 and $4700 each year,” Cr Stone said.
“More than 700 families attend the 11 centres each week, so the solar systems will also increase awareness of sustainable living in Yarra,” she said.
“The solar systems will be an example of renewable energy and show people what they can do to their own homes,” she said.
The systems will be connected to the national grid so unused solar power can be fed back into the grid for other users.
