Collingwood residents and businesses are encouraged to provide feedback on a proposal to create a new park in the suburb by converting a car park.
The proposal for a park on the corner of Peel and Oxford Streets includes the refurbishment of a historically significant building at 12 Peel Street.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the Yarra Open Space Strategy, finalised in 2006, had identified a need for Council to redress the significant lack of public open space in Collingwood, which was due to the area’s industrial history.
“Creating this park would double the amount of open space in Collingwood,” Cr Stone said.
“To have a green open space to sit in, walk or meet friends would do wonders for the quality of life of the suburb’s growing number of residents,” she said.
“There are 28 spots in the car park and Council believes the loss of those car parks could be accommodated by on-street parking in the surrounding streets.
“However, it is Council’s long term goal to encourage people to choose more sustainable transport options such as cycling and public transport, which will require less car parking in the municipality.”
The proposal includes:
“We are seeking suggestions from our community about a possible use for the building at 12 Peel St that would be compatible with the creation of a park,” Cr Stone said.
“We are keen to hear what local people think of our proposal to create a park of about 1000m2 on the corner of Peel and Oxford streets,” she said.
She said Council would be holding information sessions, to provide an opportunity for local residents and businesses to ask questions and provide feedback.
The sessions will be held on:
