The City of Yarra encourages all residents who welcomed a new puppy or kitten into their home at Christmas to register their pets with the Council and receive a free voucher pack as part of the Pet Registration Incentive Scheme.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar said she hoped all pet owners would do the best thing for their animal’s safety and register them with the Council.
“This new scheme aims to increase the number of cats and dogs registered in Yarra so that Council can identify all lost cats and dogs and return them safely to their owners,” she said.
“The registration fees also help fund animal control and welfare services, along with community and school education programs about responsible pet ownership,”
“It is important for pets to be registered so they can be returned safely to their owners if they become lost. Sadly, a number of unidentifiable pets in pounds have to be euthanized, because without a registration tag it is impossible to locate their owner.”
In the twelve months leading up to August 2006 Yarra Council picked up 134 lost dogs and 131 lost cats, highlighting the need for a means of identification.
Free voucher booklets are available to pet owners who register a new pet or a previously unregistered animal.
The packs vary slightly and may include:
All cats and dogs over three months of age must be registered with Council. Pet owners should contact the City of Yarra on 9205 5555 or visit Richmond or Collingwood Town Hall to register a new pet and receive the free voucher booklet.
