The City of Yarra Disability Advisory Committee, with the support of Council, is inviting prominent Government representatives, State election candidates and community members to an important forum to get answers on accessible building legislation.
Currently both the State and Federal Government have legislation under review that, if adopted, will ensure all new commercial buildings and private dwellings are accessible and meet access standards in-line with the Discrimination Act 1992.
Chairperson of Yarra’s Disability Advisory Committee (DAC), Councillor Kathleen Maltzahn, said the aim of the forum was to strongly encourage both levels of Government to move forward with this legislation.
“This issue is of the highest importance and central to the rights of people with a disability to live, work and access services in the community,” she said.
“Our community wants answers in relation to what is happening with this legislation.
“Accessible building legislation will not only benefit people with a disability, it will assist many others in the community including parents with prams and older people with walking difficulties.
“We are part of an ageing society. All of us at some stage will need better access to buildings, services and facilities.
“We support the rights of all people to have equal access to buildings, information and services.”
Cr Maltzahn said Yarra City Council was one a small group of councils leading the way in this area and had already developed a local accessible building policy, which was currently on public exhibition.
“We are seeking the State Government to adopt the legislation under review or at the very least support and approve Yarra’s accessible building policy, allowing us to move forward in this area,” she said.
The forum is on Monday 23 October from 2pm to 4.30pm at the Richmond Town Hall, 333 Bridge Road.
This is a free forum and everyone is welcome to attend. RSVP by 18 October to Yarra City Council on 9205 5555 or info@yarracity.vic.gov.au.
