The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said: "We are extremely delighted at Yarra that Victoria Park has been added to the Victorian Heritage Register.
"This decision recognises the importance of protecting Victoria Park as a very significant site in our sporting history and as a place that has a rich association with our sporting heritage.
"The Heritage Victoria decision, in conjunction with our vision for the park will ensure that this historical local icon is both restored and improved so that it can be enjoyed and utilised by sporting groups, local schools and the local community.
"Now that the nomination process has been completed, we can work towards finalising the Victoria Park Masterplan, in consultation with Heritage Victoria, the Victoria Park Working Group and the local community.
"Heritage Victoria has already approved some internal maintenance works for the Ryder Stand undercroft and for the former Collingwood Social Club.
"The Ryder Stand works are currently underway and include upgrades to change rooms, amenities, meeting rooms and offices.
"Works to the former Social Club will commence in the near future and will involve a new coat of paint as well as repairs to the lift and air-conditioning systems.
"Currently the ground is being used by the Fitzroy Reds as a training facility and for some of the Red's home games. The VFL umpires train at the park three nights a week.
"I would like to thank all the members of the Victoria Park Working Group, including Yarra City Councillor Stephen Jolly and senior Council officers.
"This group has, and will continue to play an important role in assisting Council with completing the Victoria Park Masterplan."
