New Mayor elected for the City of Yarra

At last night's Ceremonial Meeting, Councillor Jenny Farrar was elected Mayor of the City of Yarra for a 12-month term.

Cr Farrar said she was honored to be elected Mayor and looked forward to working with her fellow Councillors and Council staff to achieve many positive outcomes for the City of Yarra .

"I also look forward to being Mayor of such a diverse, vibrant and passionate community," she said.

"I would like to acknowledge the dedication of the many local community groups who play a pivotal role in building and strengthening this municipality.

"I also want to congratulate our outgoing Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky. She has worked extremely hard as Mayor throughout 2006 and has done a wonderful job.

"My aim as Mayor over the next 12 months is to ensure continued improvement in service delivery in particular childcare and human services and continued progress with asset management including the implementation of the Open Space Strategy.

"One of my first challenges as Mayor will be to oversee the appointment of a new CEO at Yarra.

"I am committed, along with my fellow Councillors to appointing someone with solid experience, dedication and a drive to serve the community.

"I also took the opportunity last night to announce my first initiative as Mayor - developing stronger ties and relationships with regional municipalities.

"This will enable to us to work on state-wide issues together and give us the opportunity to support our regional neighbours when they need out help, like in situations they are experience at the moment with the devastating bushfires.

"I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work closely with the talented and dedicated staff and Councillors at the City of Yarra . I know that as we all work together over the next 12 months we can achieve many positive and meaningful outcomes for the local community.
