The City of Yarra has worked together with councils from the Inner South Metropolitan Mayors Forum to successfully lobby the State Government for increased funding to tackle the problem of graffiti.
In May, eight metropolitan councils called on the State Government to provide more support and resources to help communities across Melbourne tackle graffiti.
This month the State Government has responded with a $400,000 grant program that will help councils work with community groups to tackle graffiti within their municipalities.
Grants of $5,000 to $20,000 will be awarded to local councils to undertake graffiti-busting projects, in conjunction with community groups. The grants funding can be used to start new projects or to continue an existing initiative.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky said the Preventing Graffiti Community Grants Fund will support local community groups taking the lead in removing and preventing illegal graffiti from the City of Yarra.
“Experience shows us that illegal tagging and issues of graffiti are best managed using local solutions from local groups and council,” she said.
“Vandals need to know that their community is prepared to take action and improve public spaces damaged by this illegal activity.
“Graffiti, or illegal tagging, is a major issue for many municipalities. Collectively, the eight councils represented on the Inner South Metropolitan Mayors Forum spend approximately $1.2 million every year on graffiti removal. Yarra City council welcomes the future funding that State Government grants program may provide,” she said.
Council has already developed a variety of strategies to combat graffiti, including: working with the Department of Justice and the Brotherhood of St Lawrence to remove local graffiti; introducing policies on removal of graffiti from council-owned buildings within 24 hours, developing educational programs; commissioning street art and community murals; and providing free graffiti removal kits to residents;”
The State grants will be awarded to Councils and community groups to work together on programs such as:
Local community groups are encouraged to contact council and suggest projects that may be funded through the program. Any group who would like Yarra City Council to apply for funding on their behalf should contact Sherie Marczenco at Council on 9205 5555
