As part of the Victorian Seniors Festival (1-8 October), Yarra City Council is inviting 200 local seniors to a special function to celebrate positive ageing on Wednesday 4 October from 10.00am to 2.00pm at the Richmond Town Hall.
The theme for the event is inspired by a quote from internationally acclaimed actress Bette Davis who said “Old age ain’t no place for sissies.”
Yarra Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said the event would focus on encouraging older residents to live a fulfilled life, to have a go, and to realise their personal and social aspirations.
“It also aims to encourage seniors to become more involved in regular activities and to not be afraid to take up a new hobby or learn a new skill. Being active is pivotal in maintaining physical and mental health.
The event will feature presentations from artists, performers, writers, educationalists and athletes who have all achieved elite accolades in their senior years. These presentations will emphasise that it is never too late to start a new activity.
The day’s activities will also include:
One of the highlights of this event is a display of murals painted by a group of local senior women who meet weekly at the Clifton Hill Art Centre to learn and practice painting skills.
The women in this group range from 63 to 94 years. This group is just one of the 46 council-supported seniors clubs that offer free membership and activities for local seniors.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky said she encouraged all older residents to take advantage of these social networks and to become involved in the local groups and activities.
“The wonderful artwork being featured at our seniors event is a great example of older residents enjoying being active and participating in a local seniors program.”
