Yarra City Council and VicRoads have started a major $700,000 footpath upgrade along both sides of Hoddle Street , from Victoria Street to the Eastern Freeway, to provide safe and accessible pathways for pedestrians.
The works commenced on 1 May and will be completed by the end of June 2006.
Works include the repair of footpaths, kerb and channel works, installation of a pedestrian crossing in the service lane of Hotham Street , tree maintenance, and upgrading of pedestrian facilities including ramps and tactile installations - to ensure access for people of all abilities.
Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said Hoddle Street was an important arterial road, which carried a high volume of traffic, both vehicles and pedestrians.
"The high usage of Hoddle Street , its current condition and feedback received by many residents and local traders indicates that this upgrade is an important project for the local area," she said.
"Improving the quality and design of Hoddle Street , as a major Melbourne boulevard , is also an action under the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP), launched jointly on Friday 21 April with the Cities of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Stonnington."
The work will be carried out by CityWide Service Solutions and will be conducted during the day, between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm. The footpath will be upgraded in sections and will involve closing the clearway lane on Hoddle Street . It is expected that this will minimise disruption to traffic flow during the upgrade, however drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to exercise caution when using the area over the next two months.
This $700,000 project is being funded dollar for dollar by Yarra City Council ($350,000) and VicRoads ($350,000).
