Over the past few years, Yarra City Council, in conjunction with a Community Reference Group, has carried out an enormous amount of work to restore and enhance the historically significant Fitzroy Town Hall.
On Sunday 18 March, Council will launch a week-long celebration to officially re-open this important community facility to the public. The celebrations begin with a free community day on Sunday 18 March from 11am to 3pm.
As part of the official re-opening festival, Yarra City Council has also organised a range of events to celebrate Indigenous people’s past and present connection with Fitzroy.
The suburb of Fitzroy has a special and long-standing connection with Indigenous people in Yarra and across the country.
Fitzroy was established on part of the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people. This area, like much of central Melbourne was a significant meeting place for the Kulin clans, including the Wurundjeri people.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar, said re-opening the Fitzroy Town Hall to the public meant celebrating the history of the area.
“We can not celebrate the history of Fitzroy without acknowledging its long-standing and important connection with Indigenous peoples, both past and present,” she said.
The Fitzroy Town Hall celebrations commence with a traditional Welcome to Country followed by a smoking ceremony to cleanse the building in the traditional way, by Wurundjeri Elder Ian Hunter.
Other Indigenous events throughout the week include:
