The State Government, as part of its Creating Better Places Grants Program, recently provided Yarra City Council with $74,000 to upgrade and restore the Reading Room Wing of the historic Fitzroy Town Hall.
This work includes repairing and repainting the walls and ceiling, repairing the sash windows, replacing iron features with brass on windows and doors, restoring doors and resurfacing the floor.
Once completed, the room will be available for hire by the community for a variety of uses including as a meeting room or for arts and cultural activities, exhibits, theatre and music.
The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said she welcomed this financial support from Heritage Victoria .
"The $74,000 will go a long way towards helping us undertake these much needed restoration works, bringing us one step closer to completing the overall upgrade of the Fitzroy Town Hall ," she said.
"The Fitzroy Town Hall Reference Group has been instrumental in helping us develop a vision for this important local facility.
"The Fitzroy Town Hall is a significant historical icon for both Yarra and Victoria. It was opened in 1874 and is one of Melbourne 's most attractive and imposing Victorian style heritage buildings. The Reading Room housed one of Victoria 's earliest free public lending libraries for more than 100 years.
"Since the amalgamation in the mid 90's, the town hall has remained closed, with no community access. Council has been working for the past five years to restore and upgrade this important historical facility so that it can be used and enjoyed by the wider community.
"Community Group Tenants - Multicultural Arts Victoria, Ausdance, Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters ( HIPPY) and Project Respect are already housed in the Fitzroy Town Hall Precinct, running important community programs."
Town hall works already completed include restoring the lower ground floor to accommodate a modern library and meeting rooms for hire, upgrading office space for community tenants and council staff and restoring the front steps and historic Mayor's Room and Council Chambers.
Works to be completed this year include installation of a lift to increase access and redesigning and constructing the courtyard and forecourt.
Council plans to hold a celebration to officially open the Fitzroy Town later this year.
These events are also being held to promote and celebrate the disability and accessibility works carried as part of the Fitzroy Town Hall restoration, including the installation of a lift, accessible toilet and accessible entrance from Moore Street.
These works are an essential component of Council’s commitment to work towards creating an inclusive and accessible society for all.
