Fitzroy pool was awarded 'Metropolitan Facility of the Year 2006' at the Aquatics and Recreation Victoria Industry Awards in Melbourne on Friday 2 June.
There were a number of nominees for the prestigious award including major facilities such as Casey Aquatic and Recreation Centre, Melton Waves and Dandenong Oasis.
The award recognises the significant improvements made to the facility and development of innovative programs such as:
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said the redevelopment of the facility had been a key priority for Council.
"Together with new facilities including a gymnasium, group fitness space, a crèche, spinning room and the relocation of yoga and pilates, Yarra City Council has made a significant financial contribution to upgrade the facility to include a new pool shell, tiling, balance tanks, water treatment systems, lighting, disability access and a car park extension which is currently underway," she said.
"This award recognises the efforts of staff and the commitment of Council to make this recreational facility the best in the state."
The Fitzroy Pool was formerly a seasonal outdoor pool which operated from November to March each year with attendances as low as 30,000 in 1994. Now a wet and dry facility operating all year round, attendance has risen to approximately 175,000 this year and is anticipated to continue to increase.
Fitzroy Pool is located in Alexandra Parade, Fitzroy and is open:
Monday - Thursday, 6am to 9pm
Friday - 6am to 8pm
Weekends - 8am to 6pm.
