Yarra City Council recently completed an environmentally-friendly extension and re-development of the parking facilities at Fitzroy Pool.
The new parking facilities offer 35 new spaces, incorporated in a safety-fenced area in the Alexandra Parade median strip.
The car spaces have been designed to allow grass to grow through concrete pavers that retain the green appearance of the median strip, add extra vegetation, and reduce run-off.
The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said the new parking facilities would provide increased access to the pool's facilities while taking some pressure off residential parking in surrounding streets.
"This project is just one of a number of strategies implemented to improve and expand the services offered at Fitzroy Pool," she said.
"In the past three years, Council has spent more than $2.5 million redeveloping the overall facility.
"This work was officially recognised in June when Council was awarded Metropolitan Facility of the year for Fitzroy Pool.
"Council also launched a Green Membership program in October last year, involving a 20% discount on fees for members who walk, ride or take public transport to the complex.
"The Green Membership program has been strongly supported by members who live locally. Since the launch of the program, 191 people have taken up the option, with 80% of these being residents of the City of Yarra .
"The Fitzroy Pool was formerly a seasonal outdoor pool which operated from November to March each year with annual attendances as low as 30,000 in 1994. Now a wet and dry facility operating all year round, the Pool has already had over 200,000 visitors so far this year and expects its 1000 th member in October.
The Mayor said there had been an impressive growth of member numbers at Fitzroy Pool over the past 10 months.
"Although we prefer all members and casual pool users to use sustainable modes of transport to get to and from the pool, we thought it was necessary to help accommodate the boom in membership by providing some additional parking spaces.
"I am pleased we have been able to further improve the facilities and service at Fitzroy Pool and I am pleased we were able to take an environmental approach to this project."
