Yarra City Councillors last night voted to name the grandstand at Edinburgh Gardens the Fitzroy Football Club Grandstand.
After consultation with the community and an evaluation of the suggestions submitted to Council, the Fitzroy Football Club Grandstand was chosen as the most suitable name for the 118 year old stand, which the Club's match gate-takings helped build in 1888.
Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said local sporting groups and community members had been very helpful in the renaming process.
"The City of Yarra is proud to honour the rich history of the Fitzroy Football Club with the naming of the grandstand. I want to thank the clubs who currently use the grandstand and the Yarra community for their input in the naming process," she said.
The Fitzroy Football Club used the oval and grandstand in Edinburgh Gardens as their home ground from the year they formed in 1883 through to its last League game on the oval on 20 August 1966 - a total of 83 years.
The Club's association with the ground did not die when the Fitzroy Lions left the AFL in 1996, as the Fitzroy Reds and the Fitzroy Junior Football Club continue to use the ground today.
The Mayor said the results of community consultation highlighted other important local heroes that would be suitable for public recognition.
"We have decided to consider public recognition for other important local sporting and political identities, including John McMahon, former Fitzroy Mayor and first President of the Fitzroy Football Club and triple Brownlow medallist, Haydon Bunton," she said.
