The City of Yarra has harnessed the power of local government to effect change in environmental attitudes and will be promoting numerous environmentally focused initiatives in the coming months.
Council kick-started this series of environmental events by hosting a Peak Oil Seminar in August, which addressed the challenging issue of the world's diminishing oil supply and attracted over 230 visitors.
Following on from the high attendance at this event, Yarra City Council is anticipating strong community support for the upcoming program and encourages people of all ages to come along and learn how easy it is to make small behavioural changes that can have large positive impacts on the local and global environment.
The following are FREE sustainable transport events hosted by City of Yarra :

In addition to these events Council has joined together with Friends of the Earth in hosting a ' Solutions for Climate Change Festival ' to be held on Saturday 7 October, from 2.00pm to 5.00pm at Fitzroy Primary School, Napier Street Fitzroy.
This festival is free and includes a range of fun activities for the whole family and lots of information about how all of us can change our behaviour to reduce negative impacts on the environment.
The festival will also feature Council's second 'Future of Yarra Forum', on the topic of Climate Change. Speakers from Friends of the Earth, Environment Victoria and the Moreland Energy Foundation will come together to make up an expert panel to discuss this important issue with the community.
Yarra City Council has already taken a number of steps and developed a range of initiatives to reduce its own impact on the environment and to help residents and local businesses do the same. Some of these initiatives include:
Car Sharing - Council was the first Local Government organisation in Victoria to sign up to a community car-share programs. There are now 11 community car-share cars parked across the municipality for residents, businesses and council staff to use. Council has also reduced the number of cars in its fleet by 11 over the past 12 months and 85% of its car fleet has been reduced to four-cylinder engines.
Community Power Program - Council is a partner in the Community Power Program, enabling residents to purchase cost effective Green Power as part of the electricity supply to their homes. This has reduced greenhouse emissions by more than 200 tonnes over the past year.
Cities for Climate Protection Program - The City of Yarra is part of Cities for Climate Protection Program and was recognised in September by the International Council for Local Environment Initiatives for its achievements in reducing greenhouse emissions.
As a result of the participation in the Cities for Climate Change Program, Yarra City Council has reduced its greenhouse emissions by over 5% from its 2000 emission levels by purchasing 15% of its electricity supply for public lighting as accredited 'Green Power' and installing energy-saving LCD flat screens when replacing computer monitors.
Green power uses energy from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, and biomass energy and is available to local residents at no extra cost. By choosing to take part in Council's "Community Power" partnership program with energy supplier, AGL, residents can have 20% of their power provided from renewable energy sources, with no additional cost. For a small price, residents can also elect to have up to 100% of their energy from green power.
Council encourages all Yarra residents to make the switch to Green Energy. For more information on the Community Power Program contact Silvana Predebon at Council on 9205 5555.
