Yarra City Council will pursue the development of coalition with nine surrounding Council’s and the Metropolitan Transport Forum (MTF) to lobby for improved transport in the east west corridor.
This decision, endorsed by Council at last night’s meeting, seeks to work in partnership with surrounding municipalities to produce robust and informed submissions to the State Government’s East – West Link Needs Assessment (commonly known as the Eddington Inquiry).
Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar and Chief Executive Officer, Justin Hanney will seek meetings with counterparts at the Cities of Banyule, Darebin, Whittlesea, Manningham, Melbourne, Boroondara, Whitehorse and Maroondah, as well as the Shire of Nillimbuk and the Metropolitan Transport Forum, to develop an integrated approach to the region’s transport needs.
Council will also invite Sir Rod Eddington to present an information session at the Richmond Town Hall to further inform Council and other members of the MTF of the scope and process of the inquiry.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar said, a collaborative submission would have a greater impact with the Assessment enquiry.
“The East-West Link Needs Assessment looks at transport issues across Melbourne and therefore requires a response that is more integrated, strategic and regionally based,” she said.
“By working together with other Councils more detailed research can be commissioned and then used to provide a stronger more substantiated submission.
“I will be asking other municipalities to join the City of Yarra to argue for more effective and suitable transport networks to cater for future growth within the region,” she said.
At the meeting, the Mayor also stressed the urgency of this project.
“We must act quickly to ensure we make the most of our opportunity to shape this vital inquiry. We have only until 31 May to lodge our submission,” she said.
