Residents, local businesses, students, and Council staff cleaned up 25 sites across the municipality as part of national Clean Up Australia Day activities.
Yarra City Council's CEO, Lydia Wilson, who participated in Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 28 February, organised for Council staff to pick up litter in the municipality's five major local shopping strips - Brunswick Street , Smith Street , Swan Street , Bridge Road and Victoria Street .
"This resulted in staff collecting a total of 3 cubic metres of waste," Ms Wilson said.
"More than half of this was made up of cigarette butts and plastic bags.
"Littering is an important local issue. Council spends millions of dollars annually cleaning up litter and dumped rubbish, which pollutes our local streets, shopping strips, parks and waterways.
"Through this clean up activity we wanted to raise awareness about the problems associated with littering and demonstrate to the community that we are taking an active approach to encourage people to 'do the right thing' and put their litter in the bin.
"In January and February we conducted a six-week litterblitz campaign and, with the support of the EPA, Victoria Police, Melbourne Water, Sustainability Victoria and Keep Australia Beautiful we plan to run this program again in April.
"We will then be able to compare results of the two campaigns and hopefully see a decrease in the amount of litter generated over this period."
Other local businesses that took part in Business Clean Up Day included the ANZ, Ricoh Australia , Thompson Legal and Regulatory, the Bank of Queensland and three restaurants from Victoria Street - Binh Minh, Tran Tran and Ha Long.
Five local schools participated in the Schools Clean Up on Friday 3 March and 11 sites were litterblitzed by the community on Clean Up Australia Day, which was Sunday 5 March. The total amount of waste collected over the three clean up days was 30 cubic meters.
