Yarra City Council staff will volunteer their time to help clean up Yarra, on Tuesday 27 February.
This event links in with national Clean up Australia Day activities and coincides with the official Business Clean Up Day.
Council’s new CEO Justin Hanney said he was looking forward to staff joining him in removing litter from Victoria Street in Richmond.
“Victoria Street has been selected for Clean up Yarra Day because Council is already working closely with the Richmond Asian Business Association in an ongoing litter project,” he said.
“This day is an opportunity for Council staff to show the community, in particular the traders on Victoria Street, that we take pride in the local area and that we care about the local environment.”
The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jenny Farrar, said littering was an important local issue.
“Council spends millions of dollars annually cleaning up litter and dumped rubbish, which pollutes our local streets, shopping strips, parks and waterways,” she said.
“Last year as part of Clean of Yarra Day Council staff collected a total of 3 cubic metres of waste. More than half of this was made up of cigarette butts and plastic bags.
“I want to encourage everyone in the community to get involved in the various Clean up Australia Day activities and help make Yarra litter free.”
Schools and community groups should visit the Clean up Australia Day website at www.cleanup.com.au to register their clean up site. Volunteers can sign-up for already registered sites at the website as well. Sites in Yarra include:
