Yarra City Council has planned a free community picnic day on Thursday 26 October from 10.00am to 1.00pm at Collingwood Children’s Farm, for local children and their families to celebrate Children’s Week (21-29 October).
Mayor, Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said this event was about celebrating local children and acknowledging the contribution they make to the local community.
“Council has a proud history of supporting local children and families,” she said.
“Last financial year Council spent $2.9 million and this year has budgeted $3.1 million on delivering and supporting local child and family services.
“I encourage the whole community to come along to our Children’s Week picnic and join in the many activities at the Farm including hay rides, milking cows, making damper, face painting, and interacting with all the animals.”
At the picnic the Mayor will be launching an information brochure on Council’s family and children’s services.
Children under six years of age will have free entry into Collingwood Children’s Farm (St Heliers Street, Abbotsford) for the duration of Children’s Week (21-29 October).
Also during Children’s week, Yarra City Council will be holding a celebration of the ‘Belonging in Australia’ project on Tuesday the 24 October at The Fitzroy Learning Network in Napier Street, opposite the Fitzroy Town Hall.
This project is a community partnership between Yarra City Council, North Yarra Community Health, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Fitzroy Learning Network, and RMIT. It was developed to assist recently arrived humanitarian refugee families settle at the Atherton Gardens Estate and to feel a sense of belonging in their new home.
The project delivers a range of practical programs for children and adults including child care, playgroups, occasional care, an African Women’s Group and English language classes.
The celebration of ‘Belonging in Australia’ will include an exhibition of students’ work from Fitzroy Learning Network and a picnic BBQ for students and children who use the child-care services on Napier Street.
