City of Yarra Budget 2006/07 - Have Your Say!

Date Released: 30 March 2006

Yarra City Council is asking all community members (residents, traders, businesses and community orgaisations) to have their say on the 2006/07 Council budget.

The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said it was vital that the budget accurately reflected the needs of the local community.

"Council has a range of services it must deliver such as planning, health and infrastructure, family and children's services, garbage and recycling," she said.

"In addition, Council has identified a number of other key areas that also need to be prioritised for inclusion in the upcoming budget.

"We want to hear from the community and gain feedback on what are the priorities for the City of Yarra ."

In April, a budget survey will be sent to residents, traders and local organisations as part of Council's bi-monthly magazine, Yarra News . This survey will also be on Council's website at www.yarracity.vic.gov.au

Council will hold a public meeting on the budget on 13 June at the Richmond Town Hall and an information tent during May to gain further community input - visit the website for details closer to the date.

The draft budget will go through a series of reviews and will be formally considered by Council on 5 June 2006. It will then be placed on public exhibition for four weeks.

Chair of Yarra's Finance and Governance Committee, Cr Jenny Farrar said preparing the budget was a critical task where Council must balance competing needs using limited financial resources.

"Local Government is no longer just about rates, roads and rubbish - councils now provide a range of services from strategic planning to children's services, and cost shifting means that government grants and contributions are not keeping pace with cost increases," she said.

"This is the first time Yarra Council is engaging with the Community in this way about the budget.

"Council wants to hear from our Community in terms of what are the important issues and services that we should be addressing through the budget cycle."

The Mayor Cr Jackie Fristacky emphasized that Councillors were elected to represent and to make the best possible decisions for the Yarra community.

"The community can help by having a say on the 2006/07 Council budget," she said.
