Metlink and the City of Yarra have joined forces to remind people catching public transport is a better way to work, and a better way home.
Two large billboards were today launched by Metlink CEO, Bernie Carolan and Yarra City Mayor, Councillor Jackie Fristacky. The billboards target drivers on their way to and from work, conveying public transport messages.
Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said this joint project between Metlink and Yarra City , was an innovative way to promote public transport use to people travelling through the City of Yarra to and from work.
"The large billboards will reach people sitting in their cars, stuck in traffic," she said.
"The messages are designed to encourage people to leave their cars at home and to remind them that there is a more sustainable and efficient travel option available.
"Although the City of Yarra , with 35 per cent of motorised trips by public transport, has the highest number of people in Victoria using sustainable transport to and from work, Council is committed to working with organisations like Metlink to ensure this number continues to grow.
"More people using public transport means less traffic congestion on our roads and reduced air pollution caused by car exhausts."
One of the billboards which reads 'A better way to work' is located on the southeastern corner of Queens Parade and Hoddle Street in Clifton Hill. The other reads 'A better way home' and appears on the Clifton Hill Rail Bridge between the southeastern side of the bridge and the southwestern side of Merri Creek, facing High Street.
Metlink CEO, Bernie Carolan today welcomed the support of the Yarra City Council and said he hoped other municipalities would join in the initiative,
"Metlink appreciates the support of Yarra City in reminding locals public transport is often the best option, especially when commuting to or from the city for work," he said.
"We hope this support extends across Melbourne as we continue to encourage people to get on board the public transport system".
