Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Jackie Fristacky, welcomed a $70 million funding boost by the State Government for urban bike paths including the popular Capital City Trail. This funding includes $1.5 million towards an alternative route to the cumbersome Gipps Street steps on the Yarra River in Abbotsford. A $100,000 feasibility study jointly funded by the City of Yarra and State Government, has supported this project as part of a long-term vision for inner city cycling links.
Cr Fristacky, a keen cyclist of 30 years and also Deputy Chair of the Metropolitan Transport Forum (MTF) of 17 inner city councils, said that "this was a sound investment in sustainable transport. Let's hope this augurs well for far more substantial investment in sustainable transport under the State's Transport and Livability Statement due to be released this week - enhanced tram priority, major bus and train extensions with updated signaling and other infrastructure to match.
"The State's bike path funding will greatly improve the Capital City Trail. As Melbourne 's best off-road cycling route, the Trail stretches 27kms along the Yarra River , Merri Creek and parklands, taking in many attractions - including Collingwood Children's Farm, Abbotsford Convent, Dights Falls , and the Linear and Yarra Bend Parks .
"The City of Yarra provides some of the best scenic routes and facilities for cyclists in Australia . At 6% of trips, we have the highest level of cycling in any municipality in Victoria . Yarra achievements in promoting cycling won it the 2004 national Cycling Promotion Fund Award to local government.
"Our policy is for all roads in the City of Yarra to have designated bike tracks. We also support off-road trails to enhance amenity for cyclists.
Cr Fristacky emphasized that expanding cycle paths was supported by Melbourne 2030 and the Metropolitan Transport Plan. It is expected that the importance of cycling for commuting and leisure is to be given due recognition in the coming State Transport and Livability Statement.
'Such expansion is also consistent with strategies under the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP), under which the Cities of Yarra, Melbourne, Port Phillip and Stonnington have targeted increasing cycling by 3% each year. This supports Bicycle Victoria 's goal of 'more people cycling more often'.
